Canon EOS 1DX MkII

At its core the 1DX is a full-frame 20.2MP sensor that delivers excellent colour, strong low-light performance, and a very natural image straight out of camera. The resolution strikes a nice balance too — detailed enough for commercial and editorial work without creating unnecessarily massive file sizes. It’s particularly popular with sports and wildlife photographers thanks to its speed and autofocus performance, but it’s equally at home shooting portraits, press work, or behind-the-scenes content.

It records 4K internally using Motion JPEG, which produces rich, detailed files with excellent colour information and grading flexibility. Full HD recording is available at high frame rates for smooth slow motion, and the camera’s Dual Pixel autofocus makes handheld or gimbal shooting surprisingly usable even by modern standards. The image has a very organic, natural feel that a lot of shooters still prefer over sharper, more clinical mirrorless footage.

The camera uses Canon EF mount lenses, meaning it works with the huge ecosystem of Canon EF glass including Canon L-series lenses, cinema-modified stills lenses, and countless third-party options from Sigma, Zeiss, Tamron, and others. For anyone already invested in EF mount glass, it fits seamlessly into an existing workflow.

Despite newer mirrorless systems taking over much of the market, the 1D X Mark II still has a reputation as a reliable workhorse camera that simply gets the job done. It’s especially appealing for photographers who prefer the handling and battery life of a professional DSLR, or videographers looking for Canon’s colour science and dependable internal recording in a rugged, production-proven body.
